NEW DELHI: A 24-year-old woman was attacked with knife by a man who allegedly harassed her when she was returning home in southwest Delhi’s Dabri on Monday night. The woman suffered injuries on her neck and arm while trying to resist the attack.
Senior officers said that the accused, Raman Kumar (55), has been booked for sexual harassment, causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means and outraging modesty of a woman. Kumar works as a security guard with a private firm and has been sent to 14-day judicial custody.
The woman told police that she was returning from work and when she came out of the Dabri metro station at 10.15pm, Kumar — who was standing there — started following her. She told cops that she initially tried to ignore Kumar, but then he allegedly started passing vulgar comments.
“The woman shouted back at the accused and told him to back off. Later she reached a crowded place and met her father who was waiting for her. They boarded an autorickshaw for their house,” an officer said.
However, as soon as the woman sat in the auto, Kumar allegedly came and attacked her with a kitchen knife. He tried to stab her on her face, but she blocked the blow with her hand. In doing so, she suffered injuries to her arm and neck.
The woman told officers that she alighted from the auto and pushed off Kumar, shouting for help. As passersby gathered, Kumar tried to flee but was nabbed by the crowd. He was thrashed by the locals, while the woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she underwent treatment and was later discharged.
Kumar was taken to the police station by the crowd. The woman, along with her father, also reached the police station and got their statements recorded following which the accused was taken into custody and produced before a magistrate on Tuesday morning. He was subsequently sent to Tihar Jail.
Investigating officers suspect that the accused was in an inebriated condition at the time of the incident and they have sent his blood sample to ascertain this fact. Police are also scanning CCTV footage of the area and around the metro station for further details.
