It’s been almost two decades since Gulzar helmed a film, and the filmmaker believes the wait for his next directorial is in vain. Gulzar says he now wants to sit back and see the current generation spin its magic at the movies.
At the trailer launch of a children’s film, Gulzar was asked if he would ever return to direction, considering the exciting times that Hindi cinema is witnessing.
“I don’t need to return to films because Meghna (Gulzar) and Vishal (Bhardwaj) are making good films. Vishal has made a film on children. Meghna had made films on relevant topics too,” he said.
Gulzar further said that he doesn’t consider his works as cinematic and good as some of the films made by contemporary directors.
“Now, it’s their time. Let me sit back. They are making films which are better than me cinematically. I might have had some thoughts earlier in my films but they weren’t as cinematic and good as the films made by this generation. I think they are much ahead of me.”
Gulzar launched the trailer of Goopi Gawaiya Baagha Bajaiya, an animated film directed by Shilpa Ranade. Ranade has done illustrations for all the books Gulzar has penned.
Goopi Gawaiya Baagha Bajaiya, which will arrive in theaters on March 1, has been co-produced by Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI).
