Zim govt deploys riot police in 'hot spots' as ZCTU calls for strike over fuel price hikes
The Zimbabwean government has reportedly deployed riot police in "hot spots" after the country's largest labour union called for a national strike over a sharp rise in fuel prices.
Last week the government more than doubled fuel prices to among the highest in the world, in a bid to improve supplies, as the country continued to struggle with its worst gasoline shortages in a decade, AFP reported.
In a televised address on Saturday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said prices of petrol and diesel would more than double to tackle a shortfall caused by increased demand and "rampant" illegal trading.

DRC runner-up Fayulu says country's ruling party is desperate
Democratic republic of Congo's presidential runner-up Martin Fayulu, who is challenging his election loss in court, says the government deployed armed soldiers around his headquarters because of the ruling party's "desperation."
Fayulu is legally challenging his defeat, saying that he won 61 percent of the vote, citing figures compiled by the Catholic Church's 40 000 election observers across the vast Central African country. Those figures say that election winner Felix Tshieskedi only received 18% of the vote.

Zim fuel hike: Angry protesters burn tyres, block buses from carrying passengers
Commuters were stranded in Zimbabwe's two main cities on Monday as angry protesters reacting to the weekend more than doubling of fuel prices, burned tyres and used rocks to barricade roads and blocked buses from carrying passengers.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday announced a more than 100% rise in the price of petrol and diesel in a move to improve supplies as the country struggles with its worst fuel shortages in a decade.
Residents in Epworth, a poor suburb east of the capital Harare, on Monday woke up to find boulders blocking roads leading to the city centre.

Nigeria Chief Justice forced from office, faces trial
Nigeria's Chief Justice is scheduled to be arraigned at the Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja on charges of failing to declare his assets and for holding foreign bank accounts.
The federal government ordered Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen to immediately vacate his office as head of the country's judiciary on Saturday.
The Chief Justice has a key role in resolving election disputes and Nigeria will vote for a new president in February. This is the first time a Nigerian Chief Justice is standing trial.

SA slammed with red meat bans over foot-and-mouth disease
Countries neighbouring South Africa have banned the import of cloven-hoofed animals and their products over a foot-and-mouth disease breakout in the northern Limpopo province, government said Monday.
On Monday Agriculture Minister Senzeni Zokwana confirmed the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), first identified a week ago in Vhembe district near the border with Zimbabwe.
The outbreak prompted the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) to lift the FMD-free status that the country has enjoyed since 2014, allowing it to boost red meat exports.
