Dandi memorial to be dedicated on Jan 30

Surat: The Dandi Memorial built at an estimated cost of Rs72 crore will be dedicated to the nation on January 30.

Ministry of Culture, Government of India had sanctioned Rs90 crore for the project. It was to be completed by October 02, 2018.


Sudarshan Iyengar, vice chairman of High Power Dandi Memorial Committee (HPDMC), constituted by the Ministry of Culture, told TOI, “Last minute polishing and carving work on some stones is going on. This is likely to be completed by next week. The statue of Mahatma Gandhi and those of 81 satyagrahis are ready. The 24 murals too are ready at the project site. By January 30, we will be able to open the main memorial for the people. Other things might take a few more weeks.”


He said the issue as to who should be entrusted with the memorial’s responsibility is yet to be resolved. At present, the Ministry of Culture, Government of India and Gujarat Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) are working for its completion. A final arrangement on its future maintenance is yet to be finalized.


The main monument of pyramid of light represents the theme of energy and shows the significance of Salt Satyagraha in India’s freedom struggle. It also has 81 marchers’ statues, who accompanied Mahatma Gandhi, on the Dandi March . It would have a symbolic representation of the path from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi on the seacoast and 24 murals showing 24 halts during the march. Mahatma Gandhi’s statue is 15 foot high. The lifesize statues of 81 satyagrahis evoke splendour. The memorial project has been developed on 15 hectares of land. Along with the memorial, Saifee Villa and Prathna Mandir, the whole campus is spread over on 106 hectares.
