There are two reasons for jubilant mood among residents of Jaimal Singh Wala village here. ,the native village of Shubman Gill, who has secured a place for himself in the Indian cricket team. One, it happens to be an auspicious Maghi day and two, ,the native village of Shubman Gill, who has secured a place for himself in the Indian cricket team and has brought glory to this otherwise a sleepy village. He has been selected to the Indian team which will play ODI and T20 matches in New Zealand later this month.
Although Shubhman has been living in Mohali with his father Lakhwinder Singh Gill and mother Kirat Gill since 2007, his grandfather Didar Singh(82) and grandmother Gurmail Kaur live in the village. The family owns around 35 acres of land in the village and Shahu, the only sister of Shubhman is in Canada, said Raghubeer Singh, sarpanch of the village.

While talking to D.P he disclosed that Lakhwinder was a cricket lover and used to watch cricket matches with keenness. It was a firm determination in Lakhwinder that he will make his son a star in cricket one day.He made a cricket bat of “shehtoot” as it was lighter in weight and start coaching Shubhman at a very young age. Shubman had his schooling n Jalalabad and later shifted to Mohali to practice cricket as there were not enough facilities for the same in Jalalabad, said Raghubeer. As the news of Shubhman’s selection reached the village, the villagers thronged hie house and congratulated his grand parents.Sweets were distributed in the village. His grandmother Gurmail Kaur said that she was proud of his grandson as he has brought laurels not only to the family but the village also.Such was the commitment for the game was that family invited the wrath of relatives as most of the times the father-son duo was busy in cricket with no time for social calls, said Didar Singh grandfather of the budding cricketer. Now the same relatives are happy and are coming to them to congratulate them, said Ragubeer,He plays 500 balls with his bat every day and a continuous hard work of 11 years with sheer determination has brought Shubman to this stage, said Harman another villager.
