Residents of those two streets not already at home were told not to return while emergency services are on scene, while those at home were told to stay inside.

Resident Ben Squires, who has been in the area for about two months, told the ABC he regularly heard gunshots in the suburb.

'To be honest we heard it a couple of times over the last two weeks in the middle of the night, maybe three in the morning,' he said.

Mr Squires said he heard about three gunshots between 9am and 9.30am and 'there was half a dozen to 10 shots after the police had turned up'.

Another resident said a man had refused to let authorities onto his property to discuss an aggressive dog.

A New South Wales Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia it appears it was just fireworks which had been let off.

A man was taken into police custody about 11.25am. His mother was later taken from their home and is now in the care of relatives.

Two dogs were seized from the property.
