KOLLAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's claim that "what happened in Tripura will happen in Kerala" might seem a desperate attempt to shore up the morale of his party workers, but by branding Congress-led UDF and CPM-led LDF as "two sides of the same coin" he left no doubt that BJP and its NDA allies would do their utmost to disrupt Kerala's decades-long bipolar political order in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Addressing a huge gathering of BJP workers here on Tuesday, Modi sought to tar both LDF and UDF with the same brush on a host of issues ranging from Sabarimala and gender justice to corruption and economic reservation. He, however, reserved his sharpest barbs for the ruling front, saying that the conduct of the LDF government on the Sabarimala issue would go down in history as one of the "most shameful behaviour by any party and government".

Modi arrived in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday evening and inaugurated the 13-km long Kollam bypass, a project that had been hanging fire for almost four decades since its conception in the early '70s, with both the state and central governments now seeking credit for its belated completion. After the bypass inauguration, the PM addressed a rally at Kollam's Cantonment ground.

He came down hard on Congress too. "The UDF is no better. Congress has multiple stands - they say one thing in Parliament but a different thing in Pathanamthitta (the district Sabarimala is located in). They say one thing on Monday and a different thing on another day," he said.

Reacting to Modi's "shameful behaviour" jibe, CPM said it was "shameful" that Modi chose to attack the LDF government for implementing the SC verdict on Sabarimala. "Modi should read the Indian Constitution which he is sworn to uphold, rather than Manusmriti or RSS oath!," the CPM said in a tweet. "And Modi should stop giving lectures on culture and history. Modi, your culture is Hitler's culture! Don't disturb God's Own Country by your hate!" the tweet said.
