CHENNAI: An AIADMK delegation led by deputy coordinators K P Munusamy and R Vaithilingam called on governor Banwarilal Purohit at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai on Tuesday and “presented facts” on allegations levelled against chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in connection with burglary and murder linked to former chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s hillside retreat Kodanad estate in the Nilgiris.
The AIADMK team met the governor a day after DMK president M K Stalin led a delegation to the governor and requested him to constitute a special investigation team to probe Palaniswami’s alleged involvement in the Kodanad burglary and murder.
Munusamy said the DMK’s allegations were totally baseless. “Apprehensive about his party’s defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, Stalin submitted a petition to the governor to discredit the AIADMK’s good governance and the growing popularity of the chief minister. We told the governor that it was the DMK’s attempt to seek political mileage,” Munusamy told reporters near Raj Bhavan after the meeting with the governor. The governor, Munusamy said, replied positively to the party’s request to take action.
The DMK’s request for a SIT probe came in the wake of a report by a former Tehelka journalist linking the chief minister to the Kodanad burglary.
A series of events took place in Kodanad, including a burglary and murder of a security guard Om Bahadur on April 24, 2017, and a road accident four days later, in which the first accused in the burglary, Kanakaraj, a former car driver of V K Sasikala died. The second accused, K V Sayan alias Syam met with an accident the following day, in which his wife and daughter died. On July 4, 2017, Dinesh Kumar, in charge of CCTV cameras of the state, is said to have committed suicide.
Munusamy said Stalin would be proved wrong and face disappointment and humiliation in the case.
The AIADMK leader sought to remind the DMK leader that giving false information was a punishable offence that attracted imprisonment of seven years.
“The allegations against the CM are grave. It is our duty to respond to the governor. We are here, not that he (governor) invited us,” Munusamy said. He was accompanied by deputy coordinator R Vaithilingam and MPs, P Venugopal, J Jayavardan and organizing secretary P H Manoj Pandian
