A Greater Flamingo, which was found injured in Muthialpet, was rescued by the personnel attached to the Muthialpet police station and handed over to Forest Department officials on Monday.
According to an official, the police personnel found the migratory bird lying wounded with bleeding injuries on the campus of a private school.
The bird was unable to fly because of its injured wings. They immediately rushed it to the Forest department officials who took it to the Veterinary hospital on Maraimalai Adigal Salai. Doctors on examining the bird found that it had suffered a compound fracture due to a sharp object.
According to Dr. V. Coumarane, Forest Veterinarian, “the bird was very weak and had bleeding injuries on both its wings. The bird had a compound fracture on the left wing and bruises on the right wing. It also had bleeding on its nose and the injuries had been caused apparently after the migratory bird collided with some object or an electric post during flight.”
Needs medical attention
Mr. Coumarane said that the male bird was administered first aid dressing, antibiotics and painkillers. The wounds on both its wings were sutured. The bird requires continuous daily dressing for the next one month, he said.
Though there have been instances of hunting of migratory birds visiting the Oussudu Lake near here, the Forest department officials denied any hunting attempt in this case. There were no pellet injuries on its wings. The bird will be fed with a special diet at the enclosure in the Forest department to ensure that it recuperates at the earliest, a Forest department staff said.
