Mumbai: T2 goes digital, no stamping of domestic flyers' boarding pass

MUMBAI: In a move aimed at making air travel hassle-free, passengers boarding domestic flights from terminal 2 of Mumbai airport won’t need to have their boarding passes stamped post security check, but get the boarding pass barcode or QR code on their phone scanned at the E-gates Reader.

“Domestic passengers traveling from terminal 2 can now authenticate their boarding pass at pre-embarkation security check point by scanning the boarding pass barcode or QR code on their phone at the E-gates Reader,” said a statement issued by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL). Essentially, the boarding pass will be scanned before the passenger undergoes pre-embarkation security check. “This authentication of boarding pass will eliminate the responsibility of CISF physical checking personnel to stamp the boarding pass...,” MIAL said. “This pilot feature aims at reducing time involved in completing the many pre-flight boarding checks. It is a forward-looking service that is technology-driven and offers seamless digital experience to passengers.”

With this, Mumbai airport is the first in the country to introduce this technology under the ministry of civil aviation’s Digi Yatra, the government initiative launched last year to make air travel digital.

Long before Digi Yatra, Hyderabad had become the first airport in the country to stop stamping of boarding passes in December 2015. tnn
