A toddler has tragically died after being found unresponsive at a rural property, sparking a police investigation. 

Emergency crews rushed to the home in Ashmont in the New South Wales Riverina region at about 11am on Sunday.

Police and paramedics were responding to reports of concern for the welfare of a 15-month-old boy.

Paramedics desperately tried to save the boy, performing CPR at the scene.

He was taken to Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital, where he was declared dead. 

'Officers from Riverina Police District will investigate the circumstances surrounding the boy's death,' police said in a statement.
