13th century inscription found in Amaravati

AMARAVATI: A Kakatiya inscription of 13th century was found in Lingayapalem village of the capital city area. Based on the information given by Anumolu Ganesh Prasad, noted archaeologist and CEO of Cultural Centre of Vijayawada and Amaravati, Dr Emani Sivanagireddy visited the village on Monday and examined the inscription slab which measures 1’.3” x 1’.3” square ft with a visible height of 2ft” above ground level and sunken to a depth of 5 ft into the ground. He suspected that it might have sunken down due to the floods of river Krishna over a period of time.

Speaking to reporters after studying the pattern of inscription, Dr Reddy said that there is a bull sculpture carved on the top, followed by sun and moon sculptures on the east , Lakulisa on the west side, Mahisasura mardhini on the south side and Ganesha on the north side. “It clearly shows that it is the Kakatiya inscription in the characters and it must be of 13th century,” said Dr Reddy. He said that details on the inscription could not be fully read as the entire script portion is concealed in the ground and he is taking necessary steps to restore it and take an estampage, after which the content, purport and the donor of the inscription could be deciphered.

Since the inscription bears historical significance, Dr Sivanagireddy sensitised the villagers to protect it. He had also appealed the officials of CRDA to take appreciate action to safe guard such inscriptions.
