Julie Bishop has smashed Australian tennis ace Bernard Tomic after the number 88 ranked player could not name the current Australian Prime Minister.

On Monday, Tomic was interviewed during opening day coverage of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

But when actor and comedian Ash Williams asked the 26-year-old who the current Australian leader is, the athlete just laughed.

Moments later, when Williams asked what former Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop thought about Tomic's lack of response, she said he should 'stick to his day job.'

Scott Morrison became the country's Prime Minister after Malcolm Turnbull was ousted in a spill vote in September last year.

Williams conducted numerous interviews during the 'Players' Party', which marks the opening of the social aspect of the tournament.

'Do you watch Netflix?' he first asked Tomic.

'Yes I do, sadly I think I've got my ex's account,' Tomic says.

'For $5 who is the current Australian Prime Minister?' he lobs.

Tomic manages a blank look and then begins to laugh.

'One of my friends might be going for the next one, good old Clive Palmer. I'm joking I never said that,' he eventually returns with a smile.

In the next interview, Ms Bishop asked how many people got the question right, which she correctly answered.

'No one got it right, including Bernard Tomic,' replied Williams.

'Who did he think it was?' she retorted.

'He didn't know,' Williams continued.

'But he knew he wasn't?' she laughed.

'What do you have to say about Bernard not knowing the Australian Prime Minster?' Williams asked.

'He's good at tennis, he should stick to his day job,' she replied.

Among the other interviewees were defending women's champion Caroline Wozniacki, who could not name the PM - although in her defence it was Malcolm Turnbull when she won in Melbourne last year.

Women's world number 79 Eugenie Bouchard, however, named Mr Morrison straight away.

'If you're watching, there you go' the interviewer directs at the current PM.

'You just made me 5 bucks,' Ms Bouchard laughs.
