Almost complete on BBMP website, overbridge work yet to begin

BENGALURU: The BBMP website claims the construction of a foot overbridge (FOB) near the ITC factory, Wheeler Road, east Bengaluru, is nearing completion though nothing remotely resembling construction activity can be seen on the ground.
Asked about the fate of the project, Srinivas R, executive engineer (east), BBMP, said, “The tender will be called in six months and work will begin in nine months. It’ll be ready by 2020.”

Srinivas said he is unaware about the BBMP website’s claims on the project.

The Wheeler Road road underbridge (RUB) is among the many projects taken up by the Palike in collaboration with South Western Railway. The FOB will be 131ft long and 4ft wide, and cost Rs 10 crore.

BBMP officials claim the project will be taken up under a public-private partnership, with the civic agency incurring no financial investment. “It’s completely funded by a private advertising company and we are not investing a single rupee,” Srinivas asserted.

The FOB will also be equipped with a lift which can accommodate nearly 16 persons at a time. The structure is likely to be a big boon for ITC factory employees and others. “Lakhs of people try to cross the road amid chaotic traffic and the bridge will help them,” Srinivas said.

Rajesh Swamy, an employee of ITC factory, said, “During peak hours, crossing the road is impossible. Though police are around, there is a risk of being run over.”

Manikandan P, a shop owner, said the road lacks a zebra crossing. “Sometimes we have to wait for up to 10 minutes to cross. If the FOB comes up, we can catch buses on time,” he added.
