Number of crimes in South Goa decrease by 18 percent: Cops

MARGAO: The crime rate in South Goa dropped by almost 18% in South Goa in 2018 as compared to 2017, details provided to the media by South Goa police, reveal.
Altogether 1,055 cases were registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) during 2018 as against 1,281 cases in 2017.
The rate of crime detection, however, increased marginally from nearly 83% in 2017 to 87% in 2018.
South Goa also saw lesser number of cases of heinous crimes — murder, attempt to murder, rape, dacoity, robbery — filed, 70 such cases booked in 2018 as compared to 76 in 2017. Detection of heinous crimes rose to over 97%, South Goa police claimed.
Detection rate of property offences — dacoity, robbery, burglary, chain snatching, theft cases — in 2018 rose to nearly 60% as compared to 48%.
Fatal accidents in South Goa saw a considerable drop. From 121 deaths on roads reported in 2017, the figure came down to 92 in 2018, registering a near 24% decline.
The number of cases booked under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act, however, saw a marked increase – from 63% booked under the act in 2027 to 83% in 2018. Altogether drugs worth nearly Rs 40 lakh were seized by policy Lega;y year.
The police crackdown against littering also saw nearly 16,000 persons being booked in 2018 according to the provisions of the Garbage Act as against slightly more than 5,000 in 2017.
