'They are desperate': The sports reporter Channel Nine REALLY wanted for Today show is revealed... as reports claim Tony Jones is only a 'temporary replacement'
Last week, it was announced that Tony Jones will be replacing Tim Gilbert as the Today show's new sports reporter.
However, a report has claimed that the 57-year-old is only a 'temporary replacement' until Channel Nine lands their ideal candidate - Shane Crawford.
'Today needs a Melbourne voice and they are desperate for AFL legend and top-notch presenter Shane Crawford,' an insider told Woman's Day on Monday.

'He's happily married, and all round he's one of the best in the business,' they added.
According to the report, Shane's appeal is thanks to his happy family life and sports achievements.
The Brownlow Medal winner, 44, is a father of four boys - Charlie, 12, Benjamin, 20, and twins Jack and Harry, seven, whom he shares with wife Olivia.

The source claimed that the family is happy in Melbourne, which is why Shane is reluctant to move for the role.
'[Shane] turned down the initial offer so they upped it but he doesn't want to uproot his family - it would take a lot of money to move him out of Melbourne,' they explained.
If Shane does not eventually accept the opportunity, Channel Nine may reportedly remove the sports presenter role altogether, amid rumours they are also considering Clint Stanaway.

Meanwhile, Tony made headlines in 2016 for a very awkward encounter with glamorous WAG Rebecca Judd, 35.
Tony took Rebecca by surprise by leaning in for a kiss on her last day at work before going on maternity leave from her role as a weather presenter.
Rebecca instinctively pulled away and yelped, before breaking into fits of giggles.
Realising he had been rejected on camera at the time, Tony crossed his arms and said, 'OK, good, this is going well', as his face turned red.
