'The greatest catch in sporting history': Cricket fan dashes across a sheet covering seats as he makes a desperate leap for a catch - so did he make it?

  • Melbourne Renegades hosted Brisbane Heat in Big Bash cricket game on Sunday
  • Heat batsman Chris Lynn belted a six, almost caught by fan in crowd at Geelong
  • Commentators said effort would have been 'greatest catch in sporting history'

A cricket fan showed scant regard for his safety when watching Brisbane Heat take on the Melbourne Renegades in Sunday's Big Bash T20 game in Geelong.

The unknown man, dressed in blue shorts and a white T-shirt, leapt out of his seat, racing across the black cloth covering rows of seats behind the sight screen at Geelong's GMHBA Stadium.

He looked on course to snare the 'greatest catch in sporting history' after Heat batsman Chris Lynn smashed a monster 95-metre six off the bowling of leg-spinner Cameron Boyce - only to stumble at the crucial moment.

English great Michael Vaughan praised the man's valiant effort.

'That is commitment,' he said in commentary.

'I don't know what your name is, sir, but you are committed to the cause.'

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting was equally impressed.

'Jeez, he wanted it, didn't he?!' he said.

'I tell you what, he must have really wanted it, that's quite an unsteady surface to be running on.'

Brisbane Heat won comfortably by 101 runs to stay in the hunt for the finals, with Brendon McCullum (69) and skipper Lynn (66 not out) keeping the crowd entertained with a plethora of sixes in their stay at the crease.
