Man dead, woman critical after alleged domestic violence attack
A 40-year-old man has died and his 60-year-old mother-in-law is in a critical condition at Westmead Hospital after a "gruesome" stabbing at the man's home north-west of Sydney.
Police, NSW Ambulance and the CareFlight helicopter arrived at the house in Enfield Avenue, North Richmond, just before 11am following reports of a disturbance.
There, police found the woman with serious stab wounds to her neck and the man, who lived there with his wife and teenage daughter, dead.
"[The 60-year-old woman] is presently being operated on at Westmead," Hawksbury Police Area Commander Detective Superintendent Jim Stewart told reporters, referring to the stabbing as domestic violence.
The man's wife was at home at the time and suffered minor lacerations. The couple's 13-year-old daughter and another teenager were also at the house.
"They are being well cared for by family and police; they are physically well. Their welfare is a priority for us," Superintendent Stewart said.
The home's occupants were known to police for other domestic violence issues, he said.
Something occurred at the house before the stabbing, he said.
Nobody has been charged but the house remains a crime scene.
"All people that we need to speak to, we've spoken to," Superintendent Stewart said.
"There's nothing more tragic than coming to a family situation and someone is deceased. It's unacceptable.
"People have to be safe in their homes. You have to look after each other. It's gruesome, horrific. It's always horrible to walk into a situation like that."
