MAPUSA: An explosion at Tuem industrial estate on Saturday left nine workers injured, three of them critically. The blast happened at around 12.15pm, when the boiler chamber in Venlax Cement Bricks Making Unit in plot number 12, exploded. The explosion was so severe that parts of the chamber shot into the air and damaged another unit in the area, in addition to vehicles.

An initial report by the fire and emergency services stated that blast caused damage over an area of 100 sqm.

After the explosion, locals rushed into the unit and rescued six workers from the unit, who were sent for treatment to the Tuem primary health centre. However, it soon came to light that there were a total of nine workers at the site, prompting the rescue mission to continue. Two more workers were subsequently rescued. The ninth was rescued by fire and emergency services personnel. The last three to be rescued - Akil Naik, Ajit Neke and Ramjan Ali - are in critical condition and have been shifted to the Goa Medical College.

The explosion also caused some panic among residents of the area as damaged parts were flung a great distance away.

Preliminary estimates suggest a loss of Rs 25 lakh, including damage to the factory, a car, a truck, two motorcycles, and other items.

“We received a call at 12.20pm and when the team rushed to the site, we saw huge destruction as result of the blast,” said Pernem fire station officer Namdev Parwar. “The blast was due to the tremendous heat and pressure in the hot chamber of the processing unit. It further resulted in the explosion of a huge industrial conveyance pipe, which flew and hit a nearby parked truck. It also caused water storage tanks belonging to another industrial unit to burst, and even damaged a car parked 100m away from the blast site. Due to this continuous series of accidental explosions, an industrial pipe 500m away also collapsed.”

Pernem PI Sandesh Chodankar said an offence has been registered against the owner Rajendra Joshi, and the management under IPC Sections 337, 338 and 427.
