Non-availability of land major obstacle: Minister

All Public Works Department (PWD) roads in and around the Kannur town will undergo improvement and widening under the Kannur City Road Improvement Project.

Minister for Public Works G. Sudhakaran said at a function here on January 12 that a ₹600-crore project would be implemented for developing and improving roads under the PWD roads.

The project would offer a solution to the problem of traffic gridlock on roads in Kannur Assembly constituency.

Compensation

A major obstacle to the project was not shortage of funds but non-availability of land, the Minister said adding that people who offered land for the project would be given good compensation.

The existing roads having a width of 5 metres to 5.5 metres will be widened up to 12 metres under the project. The improved roads will have walkways, drainage systems, decks for laying underground cables without digging roads, fencing, among others.
