Porsche Gives Us Our First Driving Look At New 911 Cabriolet

The second member of the 992 family has been revealed and is none other than the new 911 Cabriolet.

Porsche released the first driving footage of its new soft-top 911, which now features a newly-designed fabric roof with a lightweight mechanism that has magnesium bows in order to prevent it from ballooning at high speeds.

The roof’s new hydraulics also make it faster than ever, with Porsche claiming it takes around 12 seconds to oper or close, at speeds up to 31mph (50km/h). An electronically operated wind deflector is also present, as you would expect from a convertible of this price range.

The new 911 Cabriolet will be initially available in the same versions as its fixed-roof sibling: the rear-wheel drive Carrera S and the AWD Carrera 4S. Power comes from Porsche’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six engine, producing 444hp (450PS) and 391lb-ft (530Nm) of peak torque paired to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Porsche claims that the convertible 911 Carrera S can hit 62mph (100km/h) from a standstill in 3.7 seconds, while the 4S drops that time by one tenth of a second. Top speed is 190mph (306km/h) for the S and 189mph (304km/h) for the 4S.

Compared to the outgoing model, the new 911 Cabriolet comes with a stiffer chassis, mostly thanks to the new engine mountings. For the first time, it will have the option of the Active Suspension Management (PASM), which features stiffer springs and anti-roll bars and a 10mm reduction in ride height.

Porsche will launch the new 911 Cabriolet in the U.S. market later this year, with prices starting from $126,100 for the Carrera S and $133,400 for the 4S.
