MOHALI: There was no hologram seal on the 2,448 bottles of liquor that the Punjab excise department seized here on Saturday in a campaign against cross-border smuggling aided by local bottling plants.
The department's mobile wing seized 204 cartons of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) being smuggled into Mohali. The alcohol carried whiskey brand 999 Power Star and Rajdhani Whiskey, and country-liquor label Jubilee Special. A Swaraj Mazda canter with a Punjab registration number was shipping the consignment. Assistant excise and taxation commissioner (AETC) Paramjit Singh said it was the 12th liquor haul seized by the team of tax officers Jaspreet Singh, Sarupinder Singh, and Vinay Kumar.
He said: "Our team intercepted the canter on the Kharar-Morinda road after alerting the Gharuan police post. The driver ran through the checkpoint but we chased him down. On searching the vehicle, we found 204 cartons packed with 2,448 bottles of liquor that had no mandatory hologram."
The officer said the canter had 1,092 and 1,176 bottles of Power Star and Rajdhani whiskey, respectively, and 180 bottles of Jubilee Special country liquor, all brewed for sale in Chandigarh.
