Security measures have been stepped up on the Sathram-Pulmedu forest path in view of the chances of wild animals entering the road.

An official of the Forest Department said that additional measures were taken after an attack by a wild elephant on a Sabaraimala pilgrim. Instructions have been given to pilgrims on the security measures to be followed and they are allowed entry from Sathram to Pulmedu only after 8 a.m. After 1 p.m. pilgrims are not allowed to travel on the forest path. Officials of the Forest Department have been deputed to monitor the situation at Sathram, Seethakulam, Zero Point, Uppupara and Kazhuthakuzhy.

Two elephant squads have been deployed on the forest path to take stock of the movements of wild animals.

The official said that pilgrims have been given directions to move in groups on the forest path. A few days back, wild elephants were sighted on the forest path, he said.

Vehicle available

The Forest Department has made available a vehicle for emergency purposes.

The safety measures are being taken under the directions of Periyar Tiger Reserve officials led by Deputy Director (west) C.K.Habi and Range Officer Priya T.Joseph.
