COIMBATORE: After a six-month-long struggle, the city corporation has finally got both the administrative and technical clearance to restore and rejuvenate three lakes in the city limit. It is most likely to launch the project in March.
Under phase I of the lake rejuvenation and restoration project, the civic body will give a facelift to Periyakulam, Selva Chintamani and Valankulam, in the heart of the city.
“Contractors have been invited to participate in tender, which will be floated in February. Once the contractor is finalised, work order will be issued. If everything goes well, work will commence in March,” a corporation official involved in the project told TOI.
Over a period of time, after several submissions and revisions, the corporation had reduced the estimation cost of the project from Rs 357crore to Rs 152crore, the official said.
The corporation first submitted the project before the high-power committee in July. “The cost has been reduced by about 60% as we have chosen government-fixed schedule of rates (SOR) for most of the components. Every single element, like non-motorized tracks, toilets, benches, check dams, sluice gates and micro sewage treatment plants, will be considered as a component. There are over 800 components included to restore each lake.”
One such element is setting up a protective shelter for cattlegoshalaon the three-acre land near Periyakulam along the Perur Bypass to make agriculture co-exist with the infrastructural developments in the urban space.
The official said that even though the component was approved by the state government, they are yet to receive land from the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE).
As there is no provision to purchase land under the smart city mission projects, the corporation, through the government, has been holding talks to acquire the land from the department. But the department wants the civic body to purchase the land for over 200% than the market value.
Corporation officials expressed confidence about acquiring the land.
