A meeting of the district-level safety committee, chaired by District Collector A.R. Ajayakumar, directed Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) officials to pay compensation within a month to the kin of those who were electrocuted.
Mr. Ajayakumar also directed officials to erect sign boards in places where underground cables had been laid. The meeting held that electrocution cases were relatively less in the district.
As many as 57 electrocution cases have been reported in the district since 2014, M.P. Shyam Prasad, deputy chief engineer, KSEB, said. The board has disbursed compensation worth ₹18.5 lakh to relatives of the deceased, he added. According to him, most accidents were due to carelessness and lack of awareness among the public. He said KSEB had organised various programmes, including seminars, awareness sessions, and student rallies, as part of efforts to sensitise the public to the issue.
