Starting the day on 135/5, Amla and De Kock began patiently as they waited for bad balls to dispatch.
They batted for around an hour, with both going to their half-centuries.
Amla eventually fell to a brute of a delivery from Hassan Ali for 71 with Vernon Philander (14) falling to Mohammad Amir soon after.
De Kock (77*), however, stood firm and saw the home side to lunch with relative ease.
