Nagpur: Special crime detection team of Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Sunday seized eight packets of ganja worth Rs1.60 lakh from the ladies compartment of Kaveri Express. This is the third action this year by RPF against illegal ferrying of ganja in trains.
Under the supervision of senior divisional security commissioner of (RPF) Jyoti Satija, RPF personnels have been conducting searches for suspicious things being carried in trains. On Sunday morning, the team spotted some packets wrapped with plastic tape in the ladies compartment of Kaveri Express which had halted at platform no. 1. After inquiring with the passengers, none claimed to be carrying them.
A smell was coming from the packets following which RPF personnel took them into custody and weighed them. Senior officials were alerted and a case under sections of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered against an unidentified person.
Sources said that racketeers use trains for transporting ganja as most of the times the packets go unnoticed. However, the recent crack downs by the RPF has led to substantial reduction in such incidents, said the sources.
