China mining accident: Death toll rises to 21, 66 rescued

Beijing: Death toll in a coal mine roof collapse has been raised to 21 in northern China, here on Sunday.

It is to be mentioned that in the Shaanxi province mine, a total of 87 people were working underground at the time of the accident on Saturday afternoon.

According to the sources, another 66 miners were safely evacuated from the mine.

The cause of the accident at the site is still under investigation. Shaanxi province mine is owned by a private company named Baiji Mining.

In comparison to larger state-owned mines in China, private coal mines typically take fewer safety precautions.

On asking about how the accident took place, a driver at Baiji Mining said that the information related to this accident cannot be disclosed.

Deadly mining accidents are common in China, where the industry has a poor safety record despite efforts to improve coal production conditions and crack down on illegal mines.
