NASHIK: Members of Nashik Municipal Corporation's newly formed education committee demanded that the schools that had been shut down by former civic chief Tukaram Mundhe should be re-opened as per requirement.
There were 127 municipal schools. Noting that the strength of some schools was dismal, these schools were closed down and merged with other schools. The number of schools now is 90.
During the first meeting chaired by Sarita Sonawane on January 9, some members demanded that the schools should be reopened wherever students were available.
Santosh Gaikwad, a panel member said, "In my ward there are around 800 students. In such places the schools should be re-opened."
He said that the vacant buildings of the schools that were closed would become hub of anti-social activities.
Another member Rahul Dive echoed his opinion saying that there were some places where there was need to re-open the civic schools.
"Open the schools wherever needed," he said.
Administrative officer of NMC's education department, Uday Deore said that the schools had already been cancelled on the government website and the buildings were handed over to the estate department. He added that the department would visit all the locations where the schools had been shut down and would make fresh proposal if there is a need.
