VARANASI: Nineteen children and two adults sustained burns when an LPG cylinder inside their school van exploded, setting the vehicle ablaze in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district on Saturday.
The wounded students - aged five to 10 - are under treatment at Banaras Hindu University's trauma centre with 20-70% burns.
The LPG-fuelled van was carrying the students of a private school situated at Gosai Bazar in Gyanpur town. When it was at Lakhni village to pick up a student, the cylinder caught fire. Instead of helping the kids, the driver locked the van and fled. The trapped children were rescued by a couple, Sita and Jayshankar Shukla, who suffered burn injuries in the process.
Villagers informed cops and rushed the injured to the district hospital. After first aid, 19 kids and Sita were referred to BHU trauma centre.
Police booked the school van driver, van owner and school owner under Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of IPC. All three accused are on the run.
