New Skoda Octavia Due This Year With Coupe-Like Profile, Electrified Powertrains

After unveiling the Scala hatchback a few months ago, Skoda is now focusing on developing the new generation of the Octavia.

According to AutoExpress, it might make its debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show with a coupe-like profile, which should give it sportier looks compared to the current model. Even so, thanks to clever packaging, boot space is expected to increase to approximately 600 liters (21.2 cu-ft) with the rear seats up.

The footprint of the new Octavia won’t change much compared to its predecessor. Skoda has the Fabia and Scala to cater to those looking for small cars, and the larger Superb aimed at the Ford Mondeo and VW Passat. So, the Octavia doesn’t need to grow out of its compact suit, as it’s already a very practical alternative to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf.

Customers should expect a new infotainment system inside, with a 6.5-inch display in lesser models and either an 8- or 9.2-inch screen in better equipped versions. A digital instrument cluster will also be standard in the range-topping versions of the car.

Underpinned by an updated variant of the MQB platform, the new Octavia will be available with a number of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, such as the 1.0- and 1.5-liter TSIs, and the 1.6- and 2.0-liter TDIs.

Mild-hybrid versions are believed to be in the pipeline as well, along with a plug-in hybrid derivative that might use the same powertrain as the upcoming Superb PHEV, which is also due this year, with the ability to travel on electricity for a few tens of kilometers.

In 2020, the RS (vRS in the UK) versions of the new Octavia will follow, probably with a couple of power options, with the quickest one believed to arrive with more than 260 PS (256 hp / 191 kW).
