Seeks end to bias against women

Discrimination against women amounts to committing criminal injustice to God, said social activist Swami Agnivesh. Addressing an international colloquium on reform organised by the Academy of Islamic Studies and Research at Kottakkal on the concluding day on Sunday, Mr. Agnivesh called upon all organisations with political consciousness to support women entering places of worship.

Equality of people

He said that all religions spoke of equality of people irrespective of class and caste. According to him, contemporary Indian society demands a concerted fight against casteism. “It should be an agenda for the secular parties in the country,” he said.

Addressing another session, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) national general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty said basic human values should not be allowed to be changed in spite of the advancements in science and technology and other temporal aspects.

Renaisance values

Inaugurating the valedictory session of the three-day colloquium, Minister for Higher Education K.T. Jaleel said society owed a great deal to the efforts of the renaissance leaders for the advancements it made.

Degeneracy of faith

He said social reform would not be possible without addressing the degeneracy of faith.

He said the current situation demanded respect and recognition of all faiths.

Kerala Wakf Board chairman Sayed Rasheedali Shihab Thangal was the chief guest.
