CHANDIGARH: To achieve the solar power generation target, set up by the ministry of new and renewable energy, the Chandigarh Renewal Energy, Science and Technology Promotion Society (Crest), has now planned to install solar plants on cycle stands of all government schools in the city.

In 2014, Crest had installed North India’s first solar cycle stand. The 15KWp (kilo watt peak) solar cycle stand was inaugurated in February 2014 at Government High School, Sector 46.

Now, Crest wants to replicate the model in all government schools of the city.

Giving details about the proposal, Debendra Dalai, director, UT environment department-cum-CEO, Crest, said the idea behind the proposal was to use available space in government schools so that these solar plants could provide power supply to schools.

He said they were in talks with the UT education department over the proposal and if everything went well, they would soon install solar panels at cycle stands in various government schools.

He said they were also working on different projects.

He said recently, the Chandigarh administration had approved a detailed project report (DPR) on installation of 800 KW solar power plant worth Rs 4.5 crore at the parking area of the New Lake at Sector 42. Out of the 800KW, 90KW solar energy would be reserved for charging electric vehicles.

It will be the first of its kind charging station for electricity-run vehicles in Chandigarh.

Besides, Crest has also planned 3MW solar plant on N-choe, a seasonal rivulet that passes through Garden of Springs, Sector 53, at the southern end of Chandigarh. It will be first of its kind solar plant on N-choe.

In addition to this, The UT administration, under its model solar city project, has also planned to install 8KW solar plant at the city forest near Sukhna Lake, which will provide power supply to run three water fountains in the city forest. These three fountains will be installed at water bodies inside the forest.

Crest continues to accept applications

The UT administration had recently notified extension of solar plants in Chandigarh by June 30. The notification issued by UT chief administrator Ajoy Kumar Sinha stated: “This shall be treated as last extension and no further extension shall be granted beyond June 30, 2019.” Crest had recently proposed to extend the deadline by six months. Though the deadline for installing rooftop solar power plants at residential properties in Chandigarh expired on November 17, 2018, Crest has, however, decided to continue accepting applications.

Online transfer

of subsidy

To encourage residents for installation of solar plants, the Chandigarh administration has started online transfer of subsidy for installing solar plants on rooftops to residents. Earlier, the administration used to give cheques to residents. Crest provides 30% subsidy to residents for installing solar panels.

Crest to install 44MW plants by 2022

While the ministry of new and renewable energy enhanced the city’s solar power generation target from 50MW to 69MW, to be achieved by 2022, Crest, a nodal agency to install solar plants in Chandigarh, till date have managed to install solar plants having capacity of 24.90MW, including government and private buildings.

The Union government in 2008 had selected Chandigarh to be developed as a model solar city with a target of generating 69MW of solar energy by 2022 through net and gross metering. As Crest has managed to install plants having capacity of 24.90 MW, they will have to ensure installation of more than 44MW plants in the next four years to achieve the target set up by the ministry.
