VADODARA: An 80-year-old tribal woman died after robbers chopped off her legs to steal her silver ‘kadas’ (thick anklet) in Kawant taluka of Chhota Udepur in the wee hours of Saturday.
According to police, the deceased Gohati Rathwa’s body was sighted by a villager in a farm near her house in the early hours of Saturday. Rathwa’s both legs above the ankle were chopped off and the silver kadas worth Rs 22,000 that she used to wear were missing. Later Rathwa’s grandson Harsan Rathwa, who used to live in the neighbouring house, was informed who called police.
Police officials said that the victim was sleeping alone in her house when the killers entered. “We believe that they must have come with an intention of burglary, but would not have found anything in the house so they dragged her to a nearby farm where they killed her to rob her kadas,” said a police official. He added that the robbers would have used an axe or some other heavy weapon.
Rathwa used to live in her youngest son Vitthal’s house. She was living alone as Vitthal works as a labourer in Kim of Surat.
