Indore: The doctors of Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital saved life of a 21-year-old MBA student by removing a rare intramedullary tumour in a marathon surgery that continued for 15 hours. The surgery was performed by doctors on December 19, 2018. They revealed about the successful surgery on Saturday when the patient recovered fully and is about to be discharged from hospital.
Doctors claimed that the patient will be discharged from the hospital in a couple of days and the prevalence of such tumour is one in one million. According to anaesthesia department head Dr KK Arora, 21-year-old Ankita Rajput, resident of Chitra Nagar, had visited MY Hospital in October 2018 with the problem of weakness in hands and legs.
“After going through medical tests, it was diagnosed that the girl was suffering from intramedullary tumour, which was about 40 cm long and had covered her spinal cord from brain stem to her waist,” Dr Arora said. A team led by neurosurgeon Dr Paresh Sondhiya and Dr Zafar Sheikh successfully removed the tumour.
“It was non-cancerous tumour and this might be the first of its kind surgery in the history of MY Hospital and in Indore as well. We have sent the details of the surgery to Indian Council of Medical Research for case study,” Dr Arora said. Monitoring the blood pressure and other conditions of the patient was also crucial due to which the doctors have called a machine from neuromonitoring from Mumbai.
“The machine was donated by Medtronic Company. The team involved in surgery includes Dr Paresh Sondhiya, Dr Zafar Sheikh, Dr Mukesh Sharma, Dr Mradul, Dr Ranjeet, Dr Shubham and Dr Shashank. Anesthesia was given under supervision of Dr KK Arora by Dr Rashmi Pal, Dr Pooja Vaskale, Dr Ashwani, Dr Niti, Dr Atul, Dr Jitendra and Dr Sneha.
