‘Democracy warriors’ to get citizens to vote

more-in

With Bengaluru posting voter turnout percentages lower than expected in elections, the authorities concerned are now looking at citizens to turn into “democracy warriors”.

The Chief Electoral Office, Karnataka, and the BBMP, in association with Bangalore Political Action Committee and other NGOs, launched the BoB — Booth-level Awareness Groups (BAGs) of Bengaluru — initiative on Saturday.

BAGs are “apolitical, heterogeneous and purely voluntary groups of eligible and registered voters” who work towards conducting programmes to raise awareness about elections and the importance of voting. BAGs have to be registered voters in their booths and be without political affiliations

Those eligible include anganwadi workers, teachers, staff of the postal department, government functionaries, representatives of schools and colleges, NSS volunteers, senior citizens, and members of local NGOs. Those interested can enrol on https://kgis.ksrsac.in/election/VolRegister.aspx.
