Sheela K. Shetty, vice-president of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, said on Saturday that Swami Vivekananda had said that each person had potential within themselves.

She was speaking after inaugurating the 156th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, celebrated as the National Youth Day, organised by the district administration and other organisations here.

Ms. Shetty said that people should follow the ideals and teachings of Swami Vivekananda. They should find out the potential in them and earn success in their lives. The youth had the power to build the country, she said.

Vidaya Kumari, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Bhaskar Shetty K., Principal of Dr. G. Shankar First Grade Women’s College, and others were present.

In Shivamogga

A slew of programmes were held in Shivamogga to mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

At PES Public School in the city, an ethnic dress competition was held to mark the occasion. Children dressed as Swami Vivekananda and his mentor Ramakrishna Paramahamsa participated in the event.

Addressing the programme, K.A. Dayanand, Deputy Commissioner, praised the role played by Swami Vivekananda in popularising Indian culture and spiritualism in Western nations. Moreover, Swami Vivekananda was a rationalist who had opposed meaningless practices imposed on the common people in the name of religion, he said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha also organised a blood donation camp at Shubhamangala Kalyana Mandir.
