2 drown in well trying to flee from police

Two persons died after they fell into an open well allegedly while attempting to escape from the police on Thursday night under Chatrai police limits in Krishna district.

The victims have been identified as Ch. Srinivasa Rao (20) of Chittapur village in Chatrai mandal and K. Chennakesava Rao (26) of Kondaparva village in Vissannapeta mandal in Krishna district.

The police from Tiruvuru circle raided the a volleyball ground on the outskirts of Chittapur village reportedly to nab those who were allegedly engaged in cockfight on Thursday midnight.

Police denial

In a bid to flee, Srinivasa Rao and Chennakesava Rao proceeded towards the open well, into which one of them fell. The second person allegedly attempted to rescue the other person and also drowned. Chennakesava is survived by two children. According to a section of people, including newsmen who accompanied the police during the raid, the police attempted to rescue to the duo but in vain as they were found dead. The cockfight was reportedly organised on the volleyball ground.

However, the police denied that they conducted raids on the village on Thursday night. “Our teams did not conduct any raid in Chattapur. The two persons might have turned up for the volleyball game,” Nuzvid Deputy Superintendent of Police Ch.V.B. Srinivasa Rao said. The volleyball ground is a few hundred metres away from the well.

The police, accompanied by the revenue officials, sent the bodies to the Government Hospitalfor post-mortem.
