IMPHAL/GUWAHATI/DIBRUGARH/AIZAWL: Police fired tear-gas shells and mock bombs to disperse anti-citizenship bill protesters in Imphal on Friday. While two agitators were injured in the police action, one cop suffered injuries when a protester hurled a water bottle at him.
The clash took place when women vendors of the Ima (Mothers) market joined the protest and blocked the road. To disperse the agitators, police used mock bombs and tear-gas canisters to disperse the agitators, injuring two of them. Following this, security was beefed up at the Raj Bhawan, the CM's bungalow, VVIPs' official residences and other key installations in Imphal city. Business establishments in Imphal downed their shutters in the afternoon.
In Guwahati, the lawyers' body labelled the amendment bill as 'undemocratic' and 'unconstitutional' in nature.
In Dibrugarh, hundreds of lawyers, under the banner of the Dibrugarh Bar Association, took out a rally, demanding repeal of the bill.
In Tinsukia, too, members of the Tinsukia Bar Association staged a rally against the bill on Friday.
In Mizoram, the state unit of BJP came out strongly against the bill, saying it will be harmful for the people of Mizoram as it might result in thousands of foreigners being granted citizenship.
BJP state unit president John V Hluna said though the proposed legislation was taken up by the BJP-led NDA in Parliament, the state unit does not want its passage. "We have expressed our opposition to the passage of the citizenship amendment bill and our stance remains the same," Hluna said. He added that he has already submitted a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating that the state unit opposes the move.
