CHENNAI: P Balakrishna Reddy, who had to quit as Tamil Nadu minister and has lost his MLA seat due to a conviction in a rioting case on January 7, is staring at imprisonment as the Madras high court has refused to stay the three-year sentence imposed on him.
“The court is unable to comprehend as to how a former lawbreaker can rightfully claim to continue as law-framer by seeking indulgence of this court to suspend the conviction,” Justice V Parthiban said on Friday.
With the judge declining to stay the conviction and the sentence, the only option available to the ex-minister is to surrender before the trial court.
The judge directed the court registry to post Reddy’s main appeal for hearing on first week of February.
