FL Governor Suspends Sheriff For Parkland Shooting Response

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspended embattled Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel on Friday.

Israel was in charge during the deadly shooting in Parkland last year.

Many people, including DeSantis, criticized the way Israel and his deputies handled the incident.

In a tweet sent after the announcement, DeSantis said he was suspending Israel because of "his repeated failures, incompetence and neglect of duty." DeSantis also criticized Israel and the county sheriff's office for their handling of a 2017 mass shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport, where five people were killed and six others injured.

The new governor said Israel QUOTE "failed to contain and maintain security" in that incident.

According to CNN, Israel has plans to battle his suspension in court.

He called it "unjustified," and said QUOTE "This was about politics, not about Parkland." Additional reporting fromĀ  Newsy affiliate CNN .
