Lin-Manuel Miranda brings \'Hamilton\' to Puerto Rico

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda returned to the stage as Alexander Hamilton on Friday (January 11) in a benefit performance in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as the island struggles to recover from Hurricanes Irma and Maria, almost a year and a half after they struck.

The New York-born artist who spent summers in his family's hometown of Vega Alta, outside the capital city of San Juan, waved a Puerto Rican flag at the end of the performance and thanked Puerto Ricans saying he "just wanted you to be proud of what I made." The event was attended by famous Puerto Ricans including former Yankees baseball player Bernie Williams, The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon who was filming an episode in San Juan in conjunction with the event, and 10,000 people who won a lottery for $10 tickets.

The outspoken Miranda said he hoped the show would bring tourists and revenue to the island which was devastated by the 2017 hurricanes in September and October of 2017.

He has also been sharply critical of President Trump who was widely criticized for his administration's handling of recovery efforts.

At a news conference after the performance, Miranda said Trump's latest plan to finance a border wall between Mexico and the U.S. by using the Army Corps of Engineers, which would then redirect funds away from Puerto Rico reconstruction efforts, is 'monstrous.'

"Hamilton," the rap musical in which African-American and Latino actors play the founding fathers of the United States, has won a Pulitzer prize, 11 Tony awards, a Grammy award and even a first-ever Kennedy Center honor.

Miranda has also been busy with other projects.

He is co-starring in "Mary Poppins Returns," he co-wrote the music for the animated film "Moana," and he is working on a new musical movie version of "The Little Mermaid."
