Execution of the high-profile and ambitious 24x7 water supply distribution improvement project will begin shortly after the Pongal holidays.
Sources in the Coimbatore Corporation said that the company executing the project, Suez India Private Limited, would begin the work on the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding-Tamil Nadu Forest Academy premises.
The work would be part of the first leg of the ₹ 2,373.16- crore project that the company would take up to revamp water distribution in the old city area that comprises 60 wards by replacing old water distribution pipelines with wider width pipelines, installing electronic water meters and establishing a computerised water supply control room.
The sources said that the first leg of the project involved replacing part of the existing water supply mainline between the master storage reservoir for Siruvani water distribution in Bharathi Park and the service reservoir on D.B. Road, which caters to the northern half of R.S. Puram.
The length of the existing pipeline between the master storage reservoir and the service reservoir was about 1.40 km but Suez would be replacing around 700 m of the 450mm-wide pipeline with 500mm-wide pipes.
This was to increase the supply to R.S. Puram, the first area where Suez would also replace the distribution lines and fix automatic water meters.
The second area where Suez would be taking up the work would be Bharathi Park, where it soon complete the studies.
