India celebrates 156th Birth-anniversary of Swami Vivekananda

New Delhi: India remembers one of its beloved saint and mystic, Swami Vivekananda, today, on his 156th birth-anniversary. He devoted himself for the good of people and society.

As a spiritual leader and a reformer, he worked to combine Indian spirituality with Western material progress, maintaining that the two supplemented and complemented one another.

Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863 into an aristocratic Bengali Kayastha family of Calcutta as Narendranath Datta. He was an Indian Hindu monk and a chief disciple of the 19th-century Indian mystic Ramakrishna.

He also introduced Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world and worked to bring Hinduism to the status of a major world religion during the late 19th century.

Vivekananda always invoked Indian youths to work for their nation’s interest and always gave youth centered speeches. He instilled the idea of Nation building in young minds and always believed that Youths are the future of a country.

To honor his work towards youths, the Indian Government in 1984, declared January 12 as the National Youth Day and since 1985 the event is celebrated in India every year.

-You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul.
