Nagpur: Thrust was laid on enhancing the understanding and appreciation of the periodic table and chemistry in general among students at a seminar held at Raman Science Centre, Gandhisagar, on Saturday.
The launch event for students aspiring to study chemistry was organized to celebrate the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical elements’ (IYPT — 2019). Indian Astrobiology Research Centre (IARC) has been driving special national and international programmes related to the United Nations initiatives since 2010.

The seminar was attended by scientist and head of IARC, Mumbai Pushkar Vaidya, professor at the chemistry department of Nagpur University Jyotsna Meshram, principal of Podar International School Zeenat Syed and assistant professor at Institute of Forensic Science Archana Mahakalkar who reflected on various topics like space exploration, sustainable development, industry frontiers and climate action.

The lecturers prepared interactive presentations and highlighted the scientific expertise used in the development of essential tools for application and communication of chemical knowledge for the benefit of humankind and industries.

Meshram tutored the mentees on reduction — oxidation (redox) chemical reactions and green chemistry. She also highlighted the achievements of Nobel prize winner Marie Curie who had conducted a pioneering research on radioactivity.

She conveyed former president and aerospace scientist APJ Abdul Kalam’s thoughts and knowledge about conversion of fly ash into wealth generator.

Mahakalkar spoke on forensic science while Syed enlightened students on the importance of science in terms of curiosity.

Inspiring curiosity in the students to make them engaged and independent learners, Syed said, “Curiosity is often held up as one of the most important qualities of a good scientist. It displays a hungry mind which yearns for achievements.”

Elucidating the concept of forensic science in chemistry was Mahakalkar who said, “Chemistry is used in forensic science to uncover information from physical evidence.”

Scientist Vaidya emphasized the importance of periodic table in search of extraterrestrial life.

Speaking to TOI, Meshram said, “This event is a great platform to enable exchange of knowledge and experiences related to the field of chemistry.”

The lectures were followed by an interactive Q&A session between students and speakers. Certificates were given the participants.

On December 20 2017, during its 74th Plenary Meeting, the United Nations (UN) general assembly 72nd session had proclaimed 2019 as the IYPT.
