The Gangavaram circle police of Chittoor district on Thursday received the Award for the Best Crime Detection (ABCD) for 2018 from the Chief Secretary Anil Chandra Punetha and Director General of Police R.P. Thakur in Vijayawada.
The award was conferred on the circle personnel for solving the gold theft case that took place under the Bangarupalem station limits on December 8 last. Within a week, special parties formed by Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikrant Patil zeroed in on the Maharashtra gang and nabbed five accused, besides recovering 4.3 kg of gold out of the 5.75 kg gold lifted by the gang from two executives of a Mumbai gold dealer.

The SP pressed into service 60 personnel who visited Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Even CC camera footage from Vishakapatnam to Bangarupalem in Chittoor district was checked. This helped the police to identify the number plate of the SUV used by the gang members who followed the private bus from Visakhapatnam to Bangarupalem via Gannavaram, Vijayawada and Srikalahasti.
Officials detected the movement of the members with the help of cellphone towers and arrested them. Teams rushed to Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra and nabbed members who had escaped to a remote village there.
Deputy SP (Special branch) N.T.V. Ramkumar, Circle Inspector (Gangavaram) P. Srinivasulu and sub-inspector (Bangarupalem) V. Ramakrishnaiah, and head-constable (Palamaner Urban) Devarajulu received the award.SP Vikrant Patil, Additional SP (Admin) E. Supraja and Additional SP (Operations) Krishnarjuna Rao congratulated the circle police.
