Namma Ooru Foundation is being run by persons who want to save the city’s greenery and are taking steps to bring out wholesome changes. We are looking at as many venues as possible and have split our efforts on temples, schools, colleges, gated communities, individual houses and the like. This is being done as we feel that there is a dire need to make the city better for us as well as our future generations. We are at the moment trying to educate the public on the Solid Waste Management crisis, we see in front of us. 

We had tried to approach adults and educate them about the problems. However, they do not see the problem as a crisis but a mere plastic bag in the water. Hence, we realised that there is a need to educate children as catching them at a younger age will help bring about a larger change as they tend to take whatever they learn in school back home.

We start off by approaching schools and stress on the dire need for a change to be brought about at the earliest. We orient the teachers, staff and students and then they carry out the composting based on the needs of the school. We provide garbage bins doe each classroom — green and blue — so that the children learn how to segregate the waste. We then take an assessment of how much wet waste we get and how much recyclable waste is acquired and then educate the schools on how to compost in the compound. The recyclable waste, on the other hand, is given to recyclers. The heads of the schools have also been instructed to ensure that staff and students refrain from carrying plastic bottles and containers and from using thermocol in their projects. Once we 

see that the schools have complied, we audit and then certify them as Namma Green Schools.
