MUMBAI: A taxi driver, Santosh Yadav (39), who allegedly masterminded and executed a Rs 38 lakh ATM robbery in Nalasopara on Tuesday, was found hanging from a tree in his native village in Uttar Pradesh on Friday morning.
The police said Yadav and his two tenants had assaulted an armed escort of a cash delivery van outside an ATM kiosk, and fled with a bag containing Rs 38 lakh. The accused were masked and armed.
Cops had traced the car used in the crime to a chawl in Dongarpada in Nalasopara and found that Yadav owned it. Soon after committing the crime, Yadav and his family fled to Mungrabad Shahapur in Jaunpur. Villagers came to know about his alleged role in the crime only when a Nalasopara police team arrived. The police have found a suicide note in which Yadav has reportedly expressed guilt for committing the crime. The other two suspects are still absconding. Yadav had two houses in Nalasopara. Residents of Dongarpad could not believe that Yadav, who was financially sound, would commit a robbery.
