NEW DELHI: CBI on Friday filed a chargesheet against senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's wife Nalini Chidambaram in the Saradha scam case, alleging that she took Rs 1.4 crore between 2010 and 2012, when her husband was an influential minister at the Centre, from the chit fund company.
Nalini Chidambaram, an advocate, has been accused of taking money from the Saradha group in lieu of "managing" probes by various agencies like Sebi, RoC and West Bengal's Economic Investigation Cell. In its chargesheet filed in a Kolkata court, CBI has named Nalini Chidambaram, jailed chairman of Saradha group of Companies Sudipta Sen and a company - M/s Anubhuti Printers and Publications Pvt limited. Officials said this was the sixth supplementary chargesheet in this case.
A CBI spokesperson said Nalini Chidambaram entered into a criminal conspiracy with Sudipta Sen and other accused persons, including Manoranjana Sinh, the estranged wife of former Congress leader Matang Sinh, with a purpose of cheating and misappropriation of funds of Saradha group.
In his "tell-all" letter to CBI in 2013, Sudipta Sen had claimed that "Madam Chidambaram" had fixed her consultancy and during the period of one and a half years, he paid her Rs 1 crore. He claimed that he also paid for her air fare and Taj hotel bills.
"Manorajnana Sinh assured me that... if this Chidambaram family slightly stand by me I will be great clout in India…." he said.
CBI claimed this was not legal fee but "proceeds of crime". P Chidambaram refused to comment.
