Alok Verma removal: Union Ministers say Kharge has been ‘dissenting’ all along

New Delhi, Union Ministers and BJP leaders have flayed Congress floor leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge for his dissent notes on removal of Alok Verma as the CBI Director.

“Indeed, Mr Mallikarjun Kharge is a man of amazing consistency. When Shri Alok Verma was appointed CBI chief by the selection committee, he dissented. Now, when Shri Alok Verma has been removed by the same Selection Committee, he has dissented,” tweeted Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

Another BJP leader and Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries Babul Supriyo also criticised Mr Kharge for giving his note of dissent both – while appointment and also his removal.

“Shri Mallikarjun Kharge’s dissent notices, for both appointment and removal of Shri Alok Verma as CBI chief, are proof that Congress will mindlessly oppose anything. Sometimes at the cost of their own credibility,” Mr Supriyo tweeted.

BJP sources say at the high level meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice of India JS Khehar had approved the appointment of Mr Verma as CBI top cop and the Congress floor leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjin Kharge had given his “dissent note”.

The Congress leader’s modest pretext on January 20, 2017 was that Mr Verma did not have experience of working in the probe agency earlier and instead had urged the government to reconsider the case of another shortlisted officer Rupak Kumar Dutta, who was Special Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Mr Dutta was later made Karnataka DGP.
